Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
I think this passage relates to “by their fruits, ye shall know them,” in Matthew 7:20. Purity is all about the heart and of one’s moral character. To those whom God has cleansed from within, outward things will become clean as well. “But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).
