The Story of Two Men on the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-33)

This is one of my favorite Bible Stories. On the same day Jesus came back to life again, two men were walking from Jerusalem to a town called Emmaus, and it was about seven miles away. As they walked along their journey, they were very sad and were talking about the awful things the chief priests and rulers had done to Jesus when he was crucified. They just could not understand how all this could happen. Now, here’s the really interesting part of today’s Bible Story. As they were walking and talking, Jesus himself started walking with them, but the Bible says “their eyes were holden that they should not know him.” Jesus then asked why they were so sad and what they were talking about. One of the men asked Jesus if he was a stranger in Jerusalem, and did he not know of the things that had been going on. Jesus asked them, “What things?” Now get this. These men then told Jesus about all the bad things that happened to Jesus, and they did not even know they were talking to Jesus. No wonder they were sad. Jesus then told them they were foolish and slow of heart in not believing all the prophets had said about the suffering and death of Christ. He explained many Bible verses to them about how Christ must suffer all these things and then enter his glory. When they arrived at Emmaus, these men asked Jesus to stay with them because it was getting late. Jesus prayed over the food, and as he broke bread to give to the men the Bible says “their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.” Wow! Jesus really is the Son of God, the Savior of the world!
