And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ, came to this earth born of his aged parents, Zacharias and Elisabeth; but it was God who sent him for we read in John 1:6, “There was a man sent from God whose name was John.” It’s not often noticed in this passage, but prayer was an important part of the birth of John for the angel said to Zacharias, “thy prayer is heard.” May God help us to be faithful in our prayer life for God works out his purposes through the prayers of his people.
