Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
Mary did what she did because she loved Jesus and wanted to give him her very best. As the Passover drew near, Jesus and his disciples were special guests of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus in Bethany. At supper, Mary honored Jesus with a special gift; the ointment of spikenard was very costly and may have represented her life’s savings. What Mary did in giving her best to Jesus shows a simple yet profound motive we all should emulate. May we show by our actions that we “love him because He first loved us.”
