And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul. And they were more than forty which had made this conspiracy.
Yesterday, we read in verse 11 that “the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.” Today, we read of the plot of Paul’s enemies to kill him. Forty men took a vow not to eat until Paul was dead, but God had said Paul must witness in Rome and to Rome he would go. This time it was a through a young person, Paul’s nephew, that Paul was rescued. “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us” (Romans 8:31)?
