Jeremiah 36:22-23 (KJV)

Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him. And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.

King Jehoiakim shows his utter contempt for God’s Word by cutting up the scroll and throwing it into the fire as it was being read. The enemies of God still try to destroy his Word, and many respond to the reading of the Word with indifference, carelessness, and selfishness. Oh, let us always read and listen to scripture with a proper sense of awe for it is God’s own Word to us. Let us stay in the Word and hold it close to our heart. Let us know that we will stand or fall in relation to what we do with God’s Word.
