Have you ever been to a wedding? Weddings back in the days of Jesus were different, but they were still an important time of joy, happiness, and celebration because marriage and the family were all started by God. You probably remember that in the beginning of the world God created Eve by taking a rib from Adam, and the Bible says, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and mother and shall cleave (or be joined) unto his wife.” In today’s story, Mary, the mother of Jesus was helping out in special marriage ceremony in a place called Cana of Galilee. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the marriage. Mary soon learned that they had no wine for the wedding feast and she asked Jesus to take care of the problem, and at the same time told the servants, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.” Jesus saw six water pots of stone nearby, and he told the servants to fill the water pots with water. After they were filled to the brim, Jesus told them to draw out a small amount and give it to the person in charge of the wedding feast. Now the servants were in for a big surprise. They had filled the water pots with water but what they drew out was no longer water, it had turned into wine. They could not believe their eyes, and they were amazed by what the man in charge of the feast was saying about how good the wine tasted. Boys and girls, I think the wine that Jesus made from water was special and not the same as some people drink today when they get drunk. Many people believe it was unfermented wine and could have tasted something like our grape juice. What do you think? The Bible says, “This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.” I believe in Jesus, do you?
Why do you think Jesus and his disciples were invited to the wedding?
