The Story of Joseph, Part 2 (Gen. 37)

God tells us we are to love one another, and hate is a horrible sin. Did Joseph’s brothers really hate him? One day they were taking care of their father’s sheep in a place far from home. His father sent Joseph to check on his brothers to see how they were doing and to report back to him. The brothers saw Joseph coming at some distance away and decided that this was their chance to get rid of him. Most of them wanted to kill Joseph. They said, “Come let us kill him and then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.” But one of the brothers, named Reuben, said “Don’t kill him but throw him into this pit.” So when Joseph came to his brothers, they took off his beautiful coat of many colors and threw him into the empty pit. Reuben really planned to rescue Joseph later and take him back to his father, but he wouldn’t get the chance. While Reuben was taking care of some sheep, the other brothers saw a caravan of people in the distance on their way to Egypt. One of the brothers suggested that they sell Joseph to the traders and make some money rather than letting him die in the pit. So they sold Joseph to the traders, and they took him to Egypt to become a slave. Hate is a horrible sin, and this was a horrible thing these brothers did to their brother Joseph. What do you think they will tell their father? Do you think God will watch over Joseph and take care of him in Egypt?
