Joseph’s brothers committed a horrible sin in selling their brother to be a slave in Egypt. And then they committed another sin by deceiving their father. They killed a lamb and dipped Joseph’s coat of many colors into the lamb’s blood. When they showed the coat to Jacob he said, “It is my son’s coat; an evil beast has devoured him; Joseph is without doubt torn into pieces.” Jacob cried and mourned many days for his son. The brothers hid their sin from their father, but boys and girls, we can be sure they could not hide their sin from God. Now what do you think happened to Joseph in Egypt? That had to be a scary situation he was in, but God was with him and things really went well for Joseph. He was sold to a man named Potiphar who was the captain of the guard for Pharaoh. Potiphar really liked Joseph because he was an honest man, and God gave Joseph success in everything he did. In a short time, Joseph was put in charge of everything that belonged to his master. The Bible says, “the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake” and that “Joseph was a goodly person and well favored.” With Joseph in charge, Potiphar did not have to do anything at all in his home except eat the food that was prepared for him. He really had it made. But wait, once again something very sad happened to Joseph. He actually ended up losing his job working for Potiphar, and tomorrow we’ll learn all about it.
Do bad things sometimes happen to good people, and is God able to turn our bad things into good things?
