The Story of the Widow of Nain and Her Dead Son (Luke 7:11-17)

Today’s Bible Story has a sad beginning but a very happy ending. There was a woman that lived in a town called Nain. She was a widow because her husband was no longer alive, and then her only son also died. They were carrying him in the casket out to bury him, and many of the woman’s friends were with her. Can you picture in your mind all the people being very sad and trying to comfort the woman? Most of them were probably crying. Now just at this very time Jesus came into the town of Nain and saw the funeral procession. The Bible says that Jesus had compassion on the woman and told her not to weep. Jesus knew all about her being a widow and about her only son passing away because Jesus knows everything. His heart went out to the woman. What do you think he did to comfort here? I hope you believe in miracles because a great miracle is about to happen. First, Jesus touched the casket (or coffin), and those that were carrying it stood still. Jesus then said, “Young man I say unto thee, arise.” The widow’s son then sat up for he was no longer dead, and he even started talking. Jesus gave the young man back to his mother, and you can believe she was a very, very happy mother. How could Jesus do that? Did it really happen? Yes, it really did happen because Jesus is the Son of God, and all things are possible with God. In fact, the Bible teaches that when Jesus comes back to this earth, all believers that are in the grave will come back to life again. Won’t that be a happy, happy day?
