Matthew 18:21-22 (KJV)

Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

Why should we forgive those who sin against us, and how many times should we forgive them? Peter no doubt thought he was being gracious when he suggested we should forgive up to seven times, but Jesus said “seventy times seven.” Forgiveness is of God’s nature and because he freely forgives us we are obligated to pass His forgiveness on to others and to do so for Jesus’ sake. Jesus makes no exceptions when he says to you and me, “Love one another as I have loved you.”
