Mark 7:1-3 (KJV)

Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault. For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.

Of course we should wash our hands when they are dirty, but the Pharisees were referring here to a ceremonial washing in keeping with the traditions of the elders. Their washings were not for sanitary but for religious purposes. They had no divine authority but were based upon traditions of men. Jesus said of them in verse 9, “Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.” Friends, let us make sure that what we believe and do is based on the Word of God and not on our own thinking or the traditions of men.
