The Story of Abraham, Part 4 (Genesis 13-14)

Today we begin with more very hard questions. What are the names of the three important places Abraham visited and build altars to worship God in yesterday’s story? They were Shechem, Bethel, and Hebron. What was the name of Abraham’s nephew who came with him to the land of promise? His name was Lot. Lot’s father had died many years earlier, and Abraham took care of him just as if he were his own son. Now, in their new land, Lot gets into big trouble as a result of a selfish choice he made. Here’s what happened. Lot raised sheep and cattle just as his uncle did. After a period of time, Lot’s herdsmen and Abraham’s herdsmen began to argue because there was not enough grass for all the sheep and cattle when they were together. Abraham said to his nephew, “Let there be no strife between you and me and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen for we are brothers. Behold, the whole land is before you. Choose the part you like. If you go to the right, I will go to the left; and if you go to the left, I will to the right.” Now here’s Lot’s big mistake and how he got into trouble because of it. I think he should have asked his uncle to choose first, but instead, Lot picked the well watered plain near the Jordan River. He also moved close to the wicked city of Sodom. Sometime later, an enemy king came and conquered Sodom and took the people far away to make slaves of them. So, because of Lot’s selfish choice, he lost all he had and became a prisoner and a slave. I think that’s a pretty big problem for Lot, but tomorrow we will learn how Abraham makes a brave and dangerous decision to rescue his nephew. I think it’s pretty exciting.
