Moses’ mother was paid to nurse her own child, but when he grew older Pharaoh’s daughter took him and claimed him as her son. She was the one that named him Moses, saying “because I drew him out of the water.” I’m sure it was hard for his real mother and father to let Moses go, but I believe they trusted God to take care of him just as they had done when they put him into a basket and into the river. Moses was raised in the way of the Egyptians. He learned to speak their language. He was taught and trained by the best of their teachers, but he did not believe in the false gods of Egypt. His mother must have taught him well while she had him because he believed in the true God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses also did not like the way the Egyptians were treating the Hebrew slaves. One day, after he was a grown man, he went out and watched his own people, the Hebrew people, being mistreated. He saw an Egyptian beating one of them and decided to do something about it. He attacked the Egyptian and ended up killing him. Moses then buried him in the sand, hoping no one had seen what had happened. The next day, Moses went out again and saw two of his own people, the Hebrew slaves, fighting each other. He stopped the fight and asked the one in the wrong why he was fighting his brother. The man was very angry and said to Moses, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us?” He also asked Moses if he would kill him as he had killed the Egyptian. Moses then knew he was in big trouble because his secret was no longer a secret. What do you think happened when Pharaoh heard about Moses killing an Egyptian? Tomorrow we will learn more.
Moses probably felt like a failure when he got into trouble with Pharaoh for standing up for the Hebrew people, but God still had big plans for his life. What should we do if we try to do something good and things don’t turn out the way we wanted them to turn out?
