Plague number 1 -- Blood. The Lord told Moses to go and stand by the river in the morning and take his rod with him. Pharaoh came to the water as he probably did each morning to worship the Nile River god. Moses reminded him that the God of the Hebrews had sent him to tell Pharaoh to let his people go into the wilderness to serve him, and he had not listened. Moses then said, “Thus saith the Lord, In this shalt thou know that I am the Lord: behold, I will smite with the rod that is in mine hand upon the waters which are in the river, and they shall be turned to blood.” I believe Moses was telling Pharaoh that a higher authority than his false river god was going to judge the waters of Egypt. He also told him that the fish in the river would die, the river would stink, and the people would not be able to drink water that came from the river. Do you think everything happened just as Moses said? Yes it did, and it was because he obeyed God and said exactly what God told him to say. Moses told Aaron to take the rod and stretch out his hand over all the waters in Egypt and that included the Nile River, all the streams and pools, and all the vessels that held water. They did this as Pharaoh was watching, and all the water in Egypt turned into blood. The fish in the river died, and the river stank. The Egyptians had to dig in the ground to find water to drink because they could not drink water from the river. The plague lasted seven days before the water cleared up again, but Pharaoh still would not let the people go.
The water was turned into blood because Pharaoh would not obey God and let the people go. What bad things can happen when people disobey God in our day?
