Matthew 9:36-38 (KJV)

But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

In this passage, Jesus gave his disciples, and us, an assignment. The assignment is that we specifically pray that the Lord will send forth laborers into his harvest. Jesus makes this request out of his compassion for the large number of people who are as sheep without a shepherd. If we pray for laborers to be sent into the harvest…if we help send laborers into the harvest…if we go forth into his harvest, then we are close to Jesus and the heart of God.
