Matthew 17:19-21 (KJV)

Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

An evil demon had taken over an innocent child, and the disciples asked Jesus, “Why could not we cast him out?” Let us learn from their failure that none of us are strong enough to resist or do battle with the enemy on our own. Only Jesus has power over the devil, and it is only when we put our trust in Jesus that we win life’s important battles. It was Oswald Chambers who said,
“We look upon the enemy of our souls as a conquered foe, and so he is, but only to God, not to us.”
