And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
We don’t like losing things. Have you ever lost something you considered important, like your billfold or a set of keys? Losing things can be very inconvenient; but Jesus warns in today’s Bible passage against losing our most valuable possession, our life. Jesus came “that we might have life and have it more abundantly,” but we can only experience the life Jesus gives when we take up our cross daily and follow him. Jesus alone can lead us into paths of righteousness, and Jesus alone can take us to heaven.
