A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness. The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.
How much good comes by a God controlled tongue, and how much damage is done by an uncontrolled tongue! I think the truth conveyed in this passage is pretty close to James 3:2, “If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able to bridle the whole body.” Does it matter to God if our tongue is out of control? Proverbs 15:3 says, “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good;” and Matthew 12:36 reads, “But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.” Oh, let us believe God’s Word and guard both our heart and our tongue.
