She really had lived a messed up life, this woman of Samaria, and so had many of the people in the town where she lived which was called Sychar. But, oh, what a differenced it made when Jesus passed by and talked with the woman and the people in her town. It all happened one day when Jesus and his disciples were passing though the country of Samaria on their way from Judaea into Galilee. His disciples had gone into a nearby town to buy some food, and Jesus sat down to rest on top of a covering of a well called Jacob’s well. While Jesus was there, a woman came to draw water from the well and to fill her water pot. When Jesus asked her for a drink of water, the woman was surprised because the Jews of that day looked down on the Samaritans and would not even talk with them. Not Jesus, he was a gentleman, and as the Son of God he cares for all people. He told the woman that if she asked him he would give her “living water” and it would be in her “a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” The woman asked Jesus to give her the living water, not really knowing what it was all about. Jesus then told the woman to go and bring her husband back with her, but she said, “I have no husband.” Of course, Jesus knew that for he knows all things, and he said to the woman, “Thou hast had five husbands and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband.” The woman was really moved in her heart when she realized Jesus knew all about her messed up life, and yet he was so kind and caring. She soon came to believe the truth about Jesus being the Messiah, the Son of God. At that moment, the disciples returned, and the woman went back to Sychar, leaving her water pot behind. Why did the woman leave? Why did she leave her water pot? Will she return? And will you come back tomorrow for the rest of the story?
What do you think is the spiritual meaning of the 'living water' Jesus promised to give the woman of Samaria? If you need help with this question just ask your parents, your pastor or your Sunday School teacher.
