The Bible says, “The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?” Why did the woman leave her water pot behind? Was it a sign to Jesus that she would return? Was it left behind so Jesus and his disciples could drink from it? Was it because she was so excited and in such a hurry to tell everybody about Jesus that she forgot all about her water pot? Any of these reasons could be true, but her testimony was so powerful in the city that the people believed her, and they hurried to the well to see and hear Jesus teach. While they were waiting, the disciples of Jesus tried to get him to eat something; but he said, “I have meat to eat that ye know not of,” and then he said, “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.” These words of Jesus are not easy to understand, but I think they mean that living and working for God is to our spirit what food is to our body, and I also think “living water” means that when we believe in Jesus, God’s salvation satisfies our spirit just as cool water satisfies the thirst of our body. Because of the woman’s testimony, many people came to the well to see and hear Jesus for themselves. They were very excited and asked Jesus to stay with them, and he remained there for two days teaching them about the things of God. Many of the Samaritans believed on Jesus and said to the woman, “Now we believe, not for thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.” Oh, what a difference it made when Jesus passed by! Do you agree?
Jesus made a big difference in the lives of the Samaritan woman and her neighbors. If we trust in Jesus, will he make a big difference in our lives?
